TV shelving has undergone somewhat of a design revolution recently, as bulky televisions transform into home entertainment systems with sleek plasma TVs and surround-sound speaker systems.

With the latest plasma and LCD screens, mounting your TV on a wall and saving floor space is a popular choice. Of course there is another alternative, dare I suggest it: Get rid of the TV altogether. Somehow I don't predict that one as a trend to watch out for.

Today I am writing about the C1195 USB DVR kit. In layman's terms, it is a security camera system that you just plug into your computer and it's ready to go. That's correct: this system uses your computer's hard drive to store video footage. All you have to do is plug this flash card with a little antenna into your USB2 drive, and amazing things start to happen.

The C1195 has the ability to stream video footage to a remote computer or smart phone, and will even send an email alert if motion is detected by any of the four cameras. And the picture is good and secure, because the entire system is digital. That's amazing technology for a fraction of the price that a security system with remote capabilities used to cost.

Now let's talk about the cameras. The C1195 kit comes with four. They are all wireless cameras, which means you do not have to run video cable from each camera to your computer. The only wires to worry about are from an adapter to power up each camera from a local plug-in. Even more impressive for the price is that the cameras are infrared! This means they have several LEDs that make it possible to record in total darkness. These cameras are easy to mount, which also means that this super security camera kit is also portable. I hooked the entire system up in an hour, and feel certain a first-time installer could hook it up in not much more time. The camera bases attach with three sheet metal screws, and are a snap to install. Another aspect I like about the camera is each one has a double swivel ball base. This makes almost any angle possible to obtain.

Not so long ago I was asked by Big Brother to travel to a foreign country to do some covert work. I was traveling under a friendly pretense, and I knew the foreign host would be providing my lodging accommodations. So I packed the C1195 in a suitcase and threw it in the belly of the plane.

Upon arrival to the old USSR, I was offered either a hotel room or a small cabin on a lake. I opted for the cabin, knowing each offered its security challenges. I knew they would be listening to me, or worse. So I seized a prime opportunity when my hosts (three of them) staying in another cabin had to make a 45-minute trip for food. Well, I had not packed an electric drill, so I opened up my spy box and took out some removable adhesive. The cameras were small enough that it held, and I knew I would need to take the cameras down in a hurry in a few days.

I plugged in my laptop and, presto! I was in business. It took all of an hour to see one of my happy hosts sneak over and peek into my window. I saw him coming, so all was cool, but I was tempted to put on my glow-in-the-dark rubber chicken shorts, but I did not want to kill him. A little later I almost could not help laughing out loud when the cameras picked up one of them with a stethoscope pressed to the cabin wall.

So not only did the C1195 provide peace of mind under a real test, but it also provided great portability and humor. By the way, the climate was very cold, and the system held up better than expected. So I give it a high rating, providing the distance you need to see at night is not very far. A nice piece of spy equipment for a little bit of money.

Consumer concern about toxicity in mobile homes is an issue that is not dwindling but is rather growing in importance for health reasons since there is an increasing number of mobile home occupants that have experienced noticeable serious health issues while living in trailers. Of most recent note is the many numbers of people who were left homeless in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.

As an attempt to provide immediate temporary homes to the many thousands who lost their homes, the Federal government intervened and provided quickly built house trailers for many families until they could find their own permanent place to live. After several months of living in these temporary homes, many people began to notice health problems that they had never had before such as asthmatic problems, upper respiratory issues and a host of other strange symptoms. Many attributed these adverse reactions to the mobile homes in which they lived since they noticed a strong, pungent odor that constantly emitted from the homes.

While this is a general example without complete scientific study to back up their claims as of yet, there is mounting evidence that traditionally built mobile homes have an undue amount of chemicals laced throughout the building materials that are used to construct them. Obviously, there has been a concern backed up by scientific evidence for quite some time about the negative health effects associated with living in most typical mobile homes, especially newer home that still emit dangerous chemical fumes. So why isn't the issue of toxicity in mobile homes directly addressed by health experts as well as government regulatory agencies? And why isn't the public commonly aware of the dangers of this phenomenon?

The short explanation is that to exclude or ban the material used in the construction of these homes would seriously hurt manufacturers and mobile homes sales. A 'band aid' regulatory provision is in place regarding chemical toxins used in building these homes, but really doesn't make house trailers as safe as they should be for consumers. So, it's important for consumers to be aware of what they are getting when they choose to purchase a new mobile home.

What goes into the construction of the typical house trailer? Particle board is often used in the sheathing, subflooring and decking of most mobile homes. It is also used in the construction of the interior kitchen and bathroom cabinetry as well as other areas. Vinyl is very often used to cover the walls, floor and other surfaces to make for a better looking finish.

Also, glue is used in various places throughout a home. Carpeting is used to cover floors as well. Sounds normal doesn't it? The problem is that most of these substances have a high level of various chemicals that continue to de-gas for years. Chemicals such as formaldehyde is found in particle board and plywood. It's also found in carpeting and various types of glues.

Petrochemicals are also found in vinyl and plastics as well as some carpeting. This is just a few of some of the most toxic chemicals used in the building materials of mobile homes. That's not to consider the various stains, paints and sealants used in the construction process. If these chemicals can be dangerous to a person's health, then why are they consistently used?

Since mobile homes need to be lighter in weight for road transit, many of these chemicals make it possible to build the homes much lighter in weight. Also, it's cheaper to use synthetic based materials rather than natural materials such as solid wood. It's important for health reasons to understand inherit toxicity in mobile homes for those who plan on purchasing a new one or are already living in a house trailer.
